The Search Process
Pursuant to North Carolina General Statutes, section 116-11(4), the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina is authorized to "elect, on nomination of the President, the chancellor of each of the constitutent institutions and fix his compensation. The President shall make his nomination from a list of not fewer than two names recommended by the institutional board of trustees."
The Board of Governors has delegated to each board of trustees of the constitutent institutions responsibility to "establish a search committee composed of representatives of the board of trustees, the faculty, the student body and the alumni" whenever a vacancy in the chancellorship arises. (The UNC Policy Manual, Chapter 100.1, Appendix 1-Delegations of Duty and Authority to Boards of Trustees, section I.D.) Appalachian State University's Board of Trustees established the Chancellor Search Committee in accordance with university policies, and President Tom Ross charged the commitee at its first meeting on August 27, 2013 to assist the Board of Trustees in recommendation of three outstanding candidates without ranking. The trustees carefully selected representatives of the faculty, staff, students, alumni and the larger community, as well as other individuals who provide important perspectives to the search process. Baker and Associates LLC has been engaged to provide executive search services.
During the month of September, the Chancellor Search Committee conducted six forums to solicit input about the challenges and opportunities that will face the university over the next several years, and the character traits, leadership skills and other attributes that the university and broader communities believe we should seek in the next chancellor. Additional opportunities for input include the Contact page on this website and an online survey that will be administered in the near future.
The search committee will screen and interview candidates, and recommend a group of finalists to the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees will recommend a pool of at least three finalists to President Ross, and President Ross, in turn, will make a recommendation for appointment of a new chancellor to the Board of Governors in accordance with the statute cited above.
